If that’s the case, go and watch some of the blockbuster drivel Tinseltown makes specifically for discerning clowna like you. Me, I’ll stick to subtler films like Reptile which hit all the right notes and give deeper pleasures.
I say that as someone who believes good filmmaking quietly goes well beyond the ‘obvious’ such as ‘story’, ‘plot’, ‘acting and so one, and all that is there in Reptile.
But it also has that ingredient X, so called because we find it impossible to define but are aware it is there. I am
What I like about Reptile is that it as as a definite ‘mood’ which permeates it all and which rings true and it works in spades. It really is the kind of film you can watch over and over again despite ‘knowing what happens’.
The suspense and sense of danger is screwed ever higher and carries you with it, even on repeated viewing.
Much of that is down to Benicio Del Toro, who in my book is always watchable, and Justin Timberlake – often written off as an actor and I don’t know why – and fellow actors Alicia Silverstone, Eric Bogosian, Ato Essandoh, Domenick Lombardozzi, and Michael Pitt.
I looked up the Grant Singer, the director, who co-wrote the script with Del Toro and a third guy, and so far he has not made any other full-length films, though I’m sure he will.
He came from and made loads of music videos and he has admitted he discovered that it was a bit of an unexpected challenge making the film and he was a bit shell-shocked though determined to do well. Music videos, he said, took one day, sometimes two. With the film he had work 50-odd long days on the trot and it was exhausting. I’ll be interested in your take and views if you watch it.

As for Del Toro, he is excellent in Traffic, the two Sicario films and a film I have previously reviewd The Way Of The Gun. Oh, and The Usual Suspects. As I say, always watchable.
